Great Neck Alert 824 Wetdown 10/18/2014
On October 18th, 2014 the Great Neck Alert Fire Department hosted a wetdown for the new Engine 824, a 2014 Pierce Velocity. The new engine replaced the previous 824, built in 1988 by American LaFrance. Unlike most engines where the pump panel is on the driver side, the pump panel on the new Engine 824 is on the passenger side of the rig. This is the first non-governmental engine built by Pierce to have the pump panel on the passenger side. The department researched their calls and decided to place the pump panel on the passenger side to protect the chauffer/pump operator and to allow the chauffer to be able to see the fire scene as the majority of their calls are on the passenger side of the vehicle. Additional features of Engine 824 include a Pierce 1500 GPM PUC Pump, a 500 Gallon Water Tank, a 10KW Hydraulic Generator and a Detroit DD13 500 HP Engine with a Allison 40090 Automatic Transmission.
Surrounding departments including Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, Williston Park Fire Department and Albertson Fire Company participated in the wetdown of Engine 824. Congratulations to the Great Neck Alert Fire Company on the delivery of Engine 824 and best of luck for the new apparatus.
