Hempstead 2nd Alarm Apartment Fire 04/20/2021
On Tuesday April 20th at 2:20p, Hempstead Truck 1 were in quarters when they received a walk-in for a building fire on Front St. Truck 1 notified Fire Alarm and advised they had a smoke condition visible from quarters. Upon arrival of Truck 1 and Chief of Department Boles [80] a working fire was transmitted for fire on the 6th & 7th floor of a 7-story apartment building. Engine 2 was the first engine on scene and began a standpipe operation to get the initial line into place. The fire was upgraded to a 2nd alarm bringing additional mutual aid to the scene from West Hempstead, Rockville Centre, South Hempstead, Baldwin, Uniondale, Lakeview, and Roosevelt. Upon initial searches of the truck crews, a child occupant was found conscious in a fire apartment and removed outside to EMS who transported the child to a local hospital. Engine crews rapidly extinguished the main body of fire preventing any further spread. The fire was placed under control in approximately 1 hour with at least 3 apartments damaged by fire and numerous others by smoke and water. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
