Merrick Transfer Station Fire 07/03/2020
On Friday July 3rd at just after 10p, the Merrick Fire Department was dispatched for an unknown type fire at the Town of Hempstead Sanitation Yard on Merrick Rd. Units were quickly on the road and advised by dispatch that they were receiving multiple calls. 1st Assistant Chief Gavigan arrived on scene to find a large trash fire inside the transfer station with extension to the structure and a Signal 10 was transmitted. Empire Engine 641 was first due and supplied water to Bellmore Tower Ladder 606 wile Friendship Engine 642 to begin extinguishing the fire with their deck gun & a handline. With the fire mostly knocked down, excavators from the Town of Hempstead were brought in to overhaul the pile and extinguish the remaining hot spots.
